轉自BBS站，當時勒瑰恩尚未寫出後兩本，所以筆者認為地海孤雛為最後一本(當時確是如此)，但其實後來又出了兩本，請看我轉貼的轉自上一篇。第一本好像是1968年出的，第四本1990，第五本2001，共六本。

不知道寫這個會不會太硬太嚴肅。總之，最近看了 Le Guin 的<< wizard of Earthsea >>，這原本是寫給青少年的 fantasy讀物，因此文句比一般小說簡單，就像 << The Hobbit >> 那樣。書中有不少佳句和段落，有一段我覺得寫得很精彩，值得摘錄介紹一下。

在摘錄之前，可以先想一個小說手法上的問題：
絕大部份 fantasy 故事都有法師，通常也會有「大法師」級的人物。現實世界中沒有魔法（一般而言啦），也沒有法師這種「身份」。因此，描寫一個法師角色，尤其是大法師型的角色，可說是 fantasy 小說中的特色。但法師角色究竟要怎麼描寫呢？ Le Guin 的 Earthsea 系列被不少人拿來與魔戒等系列作比較，魔戒裡面的大法師角色總是神龍見首不見尾，魔法也交代得不很多，但是「地海巫師」講的就是一個法師發跡的故事，因此 Le Guin 很用心地創造了一個具有魔法的寫實世界。Le Guin 怎麼描寫一名大法師的登場呢？在本書第二章中，有如下的描述...

前情題要：故事主角是一個叫做 Ged 的 13 歲少年，他因為天資聰穎加上因緣際會，隻身拿著推薦信來到了地海最大的魔法學院，想請求入學。現在，他來到學院的大廳，獨自等著晉見最高法師...

... The court was partly paved with stone, but was roofless,
and on a grassplot a fountain played under young trees in the
sunlight. There Ged waited along some while. He stood still,
and his heart beat hard, for it seemed to him that he felt
presences and powers at work unseen about him here, and he
knew that this place was build not only of stone but of magic
stronger than stone. He stood in the innermost room of the
House of the Wise, and it was open to the sky. Then suddenly
he was aware of a man clothed in white who watched him through
the falling water of the fountain.

   As their eyes met, a bird sang aloud in the branches of the
tree. In that moment Ged understood the singing of the bird,
and the language of the water falling in the basin of fountain,
and the shape of the clouds, and the beginning and end of the
wind that stirred the leaves; it seemed to him that he himself
was a word spoken by the sunlight.

   Then that moment passed, and he and the world were as before,
or almost as before. He went forward to kneel before the Archmage,
holding out to him the letter written by Ogion.

內庭沒有遮棚，地面一部份以石材鋪設，未鋪石材的一塊草地上有座噴泉，正在陽光照射的幾棵小樹下噴著水。格得獨自在那兒等候。他雖然靜靜站著，心卻狂跳不以，因為他好像感覺四周有靈氣和力量在運行，他也明白這地方不僅僅是石材所造，也是由比石材更為堅固的魔法營造而成。他就站在這「智者之家」最深邃的空間裡，而這裡竟開闊通天。突然之間，他注意到有個穿白衣的男人，正透過流淌的噴泉看著他。
兩人四目相遇時，有隻小鳥在枝頭高鳴。那一瞬間，小鳥的啁啾、流泉的話語、雲朵的形狀、擺動樹葉的風勢，格得全都明瞭，他自己，彷彿也是陽光傾吐的一個字。
而後，那一瞬間消逝，他和天地萬物都回復原狀──或者說，幾乎回復原狀。他上前跪在大法師跟前，把歐吉安的親筆信函遞上。

這幾段文字淺顯易懂，完全沒有任何艱深的單字。但是簡單的幾句，卻寫出超凡脫俗的意境，尤其是第二段最後一句，簡直可說是一句詩。這幾段雖然寫得簡短，但卻不露痕跡地蘊含了 Le Guin 在小說中對於魔法的設想，以及整本書所欲表達的人文思考。當然，這些要讀了書中的其他部份，才會逐漸明白，在此就恕我無力多說了  :)

另外，今天查了一下，< The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas > 是收在 Le Guin << The Wind's Twelve Quarters >> 短篇故事集中的文章，並不在 << wizard of Earthsea >> 的章節中；而 Earthsea 的第四集（也是完結篇）<<Tehanu>> 雖然網路書評一般讀者給分有高有低（這是常見的現象），但卻是 1990 Nebula 小說獎的得獎作品。Earthsea系列共四集，每一本都得過文學獎，這實在是有點罕見的現象。
